We chose this song as it was different and we loved the context of the song as its about how people try to perfect themselves to make others happy as no one is perfect, especially women trying to fit the ideal. But, in the original video they take a stunning women who doesn't need anything changed about her but because she wasn't absolutely perfect in the mans eyes he paid for her to have plastic surgery. We thought as a group we could take the lyrics and make a video that would show our perspective of the song and what it means to us as three teenage girls. Theres quite a few things we could have done for this video as taking it from different perspectives the words of the song speak to people differently although they have the same meaning.
Godwin's theory was based on and states that there are 5 key aspects to a music video:
Thought through beat (seeing what the lyrics mean in your head).
Relationship between the song and Visuals.
Narrative and performance of the song.
Technical aspect of a music video.
Star image, lots of camera shots and making him/her the centre of attention and focus in the video.
Thought through the beat (seeing what they mean or represent in your head):
There are three steps to this process the first step being, to analyse the music structure and understanding the chorus and verses. So having a basic understand of what the song is about.
Step two (main voice/ artist(s)in the song), The voice of the artist maybe quite unique and more alternative compared to other artist. This will give the person an identification that can be related to the start image or singer.
And the third step would be the story the artist is trying to portray in to artists song. The music video may or may not also show this story as it follows the vocals.
For example- Relation between the music and the visuals:
There are also three ways that the visuals an artist uses for their song is a form of promotion: Illustration- music videos use a certain images and shots to illustrate/explain the meaning of lyrics to their song and the genre.
Disjuncture- The meaning of the song is completely ignored in the music video.
Amplify- Repeatability- this is when the images and camera shots are manipulated and shown repeatedly through out the music video.
Andrew believed that a music video can promote a song by the way it works with the lyrics. this happens in a lot of music videos as the character will do exactly what the song says. For example:
Melanie Martinez- Mrs Potato Head. Narrative and performance of the song:
Andrew thought that it was important for an artist to be involved in the music video by performing or acting at the main character/ main focus.
The song therefore looks more realistic and also gives audience a good understanding of the song and more of a connection to the lyrics.
Songs don't usually give us the full story. There are generally filled with lyrics that could be interpreted in different ways by their audience but the narrative and performance in a music video give clarify the meaning of the song.
Technical aspects of a music video:
Andrew said that the technical aspect helps to hold the music video together through the use of Mise-en-scene, special effects, sound and editing.
Lightening and colour helps to set the mood for the music video and create emphasis on significant parts of the song to create a dramatic effect and thrill the audience.
Mise-en-scene is also very vital to the production of the music video, it can help the artists gain authentication and also make their work appear more professional.
The beats of the song are also very useful as they can help to create effective cuts that go with Rhythm of the song to make the music video look more entertaining. Star Image:
He referred to the star image as a vital aspect of the music video, he/she makes the music video look more appealing to the audiences while bringing a unique style to the video in the way he/she is portrayed to the audience.
The star image is an important way to present the artist e.g. the costume, moves and appearance.
It helps promote the artists image to the public and also helps to promote the video while creating a reputation for the artist.
